Where the rates come from
The rates are the euro foreign exchange reference rates of the European Central Bank. The ECB publishes them once per working day, usually around 16:00 Central European Time, for about thirty currencies, each quoted against the euro. Converting between two other currencies, say US dollars to pounds, goes through the euro: the amount is divided by the dollar rate and multiplied by the pound rate.
Reference rates are published for information. The rate your bank, card or exchange office charges usually differs: it adds a margin, sometimes a fixed fee, and it moves during the day while the reference rate does not. Use this page to know what something costs, not to settle a payment.
How to use it
- Type an amount, or a small sum such as
19,90*2-5: plus, minus, times (*orx), divided by and brackets work. A comma or a point both mark the decimals. - Pick the currency the amount is in, or click any row of the table to switch to that currency.
- M+ adds the amount to the memory, M− subtracts it, MC clears it. The memory adds up amounts in different currencies, so you can total a trip's expenses as you go. Press Enter for M+.
- Everything is calculated in your browser: nothing you type is sent to the server. The currency and the memory are kept in this browser for your next visit.
